Russia, previously known as the USSR, is the largest country in the globe. It consists of 11 time zones. Its extensive size can be imagined by the fact that Russia is twice the size of Canada, which is the second largest country in the world. One way of traveling to Russia from Europe is by train. The major rail gateways are Helsinki, Warsaw, Prague and Budapest, some of them offering daily services. Travel to China and Mongolia can also be managed on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Trans-Mongolian. A limited number of cruise and ferry services between Russia and Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Turkey and Georgia are also available. However, air travel remains the most popular mode of entering and exiting Russia. The country holds a massive 394 airports with 70 of these considered to be international. Most airlines fly into Moscow that boasts of several airports the biggest and most busy among them being Domodedovo International Airport, Sheremetyevo International Airport and Vnukovo International Airport.

Russia is not being very high on a tourist's list of places to visit because of poor domestic airports, unfriendly and unhelpful staff, rugged road conditions, surly policemen that stop and fine at every pretext, etc. For this reason, airfares to Russia are usually inexpensive. However it also depends largely on the time of the year you are traveling. Prices of course hot rock bottom during winters as Russian winters are notoriously harsh. Flights are grounded often and there are long delays. Tourists must nevertheless not let this prevent them from traveling to Russia. Being the largest country in the world, the sheer mass of its territory makes it an all-around desirable destination with a versatility unmatched by any other.
